Jack Russell Terrier Club of America (JRTCA) Youth Handler Practice Test

The correct answer is that the first Jack Russell was named after Reverend John Russell. He was an English clergyman who played a pivotal role in the development of the breed in the 19th century. Reverend Russell had a keen interest in hunting and specifically bred terriers to assist him during his fox hunting excursions. His dedication to developing a specific type of working terrier that could effectively hunt foxes led to the establishment of the Jack Russell Terrier as a distinct breed. The breed is characterized by its intelligence, energy, and hunting instincts, all of which were traits Reverend Russell sought to enhance through his breeding program.

The other options relate to different figures but do not accurately represent the dog breed's origins. Ailsa Crawford is not associated with the breed's naming. Parson John Russell is often confused with Reverend John Russell; however, it is the reverend himself who is recognized as the crucial figure in the breed's history. Trumpet Russell is not linked to the establishment of the breed but rather represents more obscure references that do not denote the direct naming of the Jack Russell Terrier.
